Occultation of Imam Mahdi (as)

Occultation of Imam Mahdi (as) The most important issue regarding the belief in Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) is of his occultation (Ghaibat) i.e. being concealed from the eyes of the common people. According to the traditions, Ghaibat is the Sunnah of the past prophets. Past prophets like Hazrat Yunus (a.s.), Hazrat Saleh (a.s.), Hazrat Yusuf (a.s.) were hidden from the eyes of their nation for a long period of time. Ghaibat is the special characteristic of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.). This characteristic is not commonly found in the pseudo-Mahdis. The Ghaibat of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) is a confirmed fact, which has been narrated right from the earliest days of Islam. It is only due to these traditions that the attributed Mahdis (like Muhammad b. Hanafia) were regarded as being in Ghaibat, while in fact they had died. The opponents and deniers of Mahdaviyyat, (i.e. the belief in Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.)) do not acknowledge the special characteristics of Ghaibat, long life (of Imam (a.t.f.s.)) and the benefits of a concealed Imam and have vehemently disputed these issues. On this basis we will establish in the light of Islamic traditions that the belief of the Shias regarding Ghaibat is correct. Kitabul Yaqeen (of Hafiz-e-Natnazi), ‘Faraedus Simtain’ (of Shaikhul Islam Hamuee) ‘Yanabiul Mawaddah’ (of Khwaja Qundoozi) have all recorded the famous tradition of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) narrated to Jabir b. Abdullah Ansari (r.a.)....

Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) had informed about Mahdi (a.t.f.s.)

Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) had informed about Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) informed Moosa b. Ja’far Baghdadi, ‘It is as if I am seeing that you all are disputing about my successor. Beware! A Muslim may testify to all the Imams (a.s.) after the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.), but if he does not acknowledge my son’s Imamat, then he is just like that person who testifies to the prophethood of all prophets (a.s.) but rejects Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.s.). Acknowledging our last is like acknowledging our first. Therefore, one who rejects the last has actually rejected (even) the first. Know that my son’s ghaybat will be so long that the people will be involved in doubts and uncertainties. Only those will be steadfast, whose faith is protected by Allah Himself.’ (Beharul Anwar vol 51, pg 160, Ithbatul Hidayah vol 6, pg 427) In addition to the above tradition, there are 21 more traditions from Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) in this regard. Are traditions related to Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) authentic? Engineer: Since you are able to identify the authentic and reliable reports, do you consider all traditions related to Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) as authentic? Professor Nasir Mahdi: I cannot claim that all traditions related to Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) are authentic and that all the narrators are reliable and truthful. However, there is a group of traditions related to Mahdi that are deemed reliable. Traditions...

All the Infallibles (a.s.) Have informed About Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.)

All the Infallibles (a.s.) Have informed About Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) Janab-e-Fatema Zahra (s.a.) Janabe Fatema Zahra (s.a.) told Imam Husain (a.s.), ‘When you were born Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) came to me, took you in his arms and said: ‘O Fatema! Take your Husain and know that he is the father of nine Imams (a.s.) and the infallible Imams (a.s.) will be born from his progeny, the ninth of whom will be the ‘Qa’m’ (Ithbaatul Huda at, vol 2, pg. 552) Three more traditions in this regard have been narrated from her (a.s.) Imam Hasan b. Ali (a.s.) Imam (a.s.) said, ‘The number of Imams (a.s.) after the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) are twelve, of which nine will be from the progeny of my brother Husain and the Mahdi of the nation will also be from among them.’ (Ibid, pg. 555) Four more traditions in this context have been narrated from him (a.s.). Imam Husain b. Ali (a.s.) Imam (a.s.) said, ‘Twelve Imams are from us. The first is Ali b. Abi Talib (a.s.) and the last will be my ninth son, and he is ‘Qa’im’ with the truth. Allah, The Blessed and the High, through his Holy existence will give life to the dead earth and the true religion will be victorious over all other religions, even if the polytheists are averse. The Mahdi will be away from the eyes...

Fabricated Traditions about Imam Mahdi (as)

Fabricated Traditions about Imam Mahdi (as) As regards the tradition mentioned below, we can say that those who took Mohammed b. Abdullah b. Hasan to be the Mahdi added the following phrase to the tradition that ‘His father’s name is my father’s name’. Mohammed b. Yusuf after quoting the above tradition in his book ‘Al-Bayan’ writes that Tirmizi has narrated this tradition in Jaam’e, but has omitted this part Abu Dawood has also reported the tradition without this phrase. Under these circumstances it is apparent that this part was added subsequently to the original tradition. There is also a possibility of a misinterpretation of the tradition. It is quite possible that the original tradition was ‘his father’s name will be on my son’s name’. And later is possible that the word ª ‚ ´ ª ¤ was changed to ” ‚ ª ¤ ´. Abu Huraira narrates from Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.): ‘Surely the Mahdi whose name is Mohammed b. Abdullah, stammers.’ (Maqatilut Talebeen pg. 164) This tradition is also fabricated by the supporters of Mohammed b. Abdullah Hasan, as the latter used to stammer, so much so that he had difficulty in speaking. His followers then invented the tradition mentioned above to justify this defect. (Zakhairul Uqba pg. 206) ‘It is narrated by Ibne Abbas that Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) informed him: There will be a Mahdi from...

Imam Mahdi’s (as) Existence: An Accepted Fact

Imam Mahdi’s (as) Existence: An Accepted Fact Abul Faraj writes: Whenever Jafar bin Mohammed (a.s.) used to see Mohammed ibn Abdullah, he used to cry and say: “May my life be sacrificed for him (Mahdi a.t.f.s.), people think that this person is the Promised Mahdi, but he will soon be martyred. In the book of Ali (a.s.), he has not been included among the Caliphs of the people.” (Maqaatil al-Taalebeen, p.142) He further writes: A group was present near Mohammed bin Abdullah, when Jafar bin Mohammed (a.s.) arrived, and the people welcomed him with a lot of respect. Then Imam (a.s.) enquired about their conversation. They replied: We have decided to pay allegiance to Mohammed bin Abdullah, who is the Promised Mahdi.’ Imam (a.s.) warned: ‘Refrain from this action, because the time of Mahdi’s appearance has not arrived, and Mohammed is not the Mahdi’. (Ibid, p. 141) DE’BAL’S COUPLET REGARDING MAHDI (A.T.F.S.) De’bal, the poet of Ahle Bayt (a.s.) recited his famous couplets in the presence of Imam Reza (a.s.) and in the end, he recited the following verse: “The reappearance of the Imam is certain and imminent He will rise on Allah’s Name and (His) blessings.” Hearing this, Imam Reza (a.s.) started weeping and exclaimed ‘(O De’bal) Ruhul Qudus has spoken through your tongue! Do you know that Imam?’ De’bal replied, ‘No. But I have heard that a...
